Pt 18. Lake Takysie, British Columbia

What do you look for in a good petrol station?

Inexpensive fuel? A selection of tasty sweets and snacks? Perhaps some decent reading material?

Well in British Columbia you get all these things and more.

Meet station proprietor Janet (left), proprietor’s friend Elisia (middle) and proprietor’s other friend Cathy (right).

We go into Janet’s office a.k.a. the Decker Lake Trading Post to pay for our petrol and don’t leave for another hour. Luckily we’re not in a hurry because these delightful fugitives ladies want to know everything about us; who painted our van, where we live, where we’ve just come from and where we’re going to next. They’re not being nosey, not in the slightest, they’re just genuinely interested in our story.

Then while we enjoy some of Janet’s ice cream they fill us in on what they’ve been up to for the past 50 odd years. We catch up on the local gossip, learn about the bloke down the road who won 25 million lotto dollars and get the lowdown on Vancouver’s biggest and best cannabis convention. None of them smoke weed by the way, they just went because they were curious.

There’s only one pump on the forecourt and our van stands there for the duration, so lord only knows how much custom they lose while we’ve been gassing

…gassing, get it? Oh never mind.

As we’re about to leave (finally!) they tell us about a smashing little campsite we’d never normally have found  –  it certainly isn’t on any map we have in the van.

So we end up at Takysie Lake where $14 bags us a prime waterside pitch.

This is probably the most remote spot we’ve been to so far, it really is like stepping back in time, I mean just look at the cars they drive out here…

Lots of wildlife too. Check out the size of this fella.

We see moose, elk, woodpeckers, grouse and a handsome golden eagle. But most thrillingly we catch sight of some real bears. A mother and two cubs right next to the road.

You gotta love Canada.
