Pt 6. Big Sur / Arroyo Seco

This place really is the gift that keeps on giving. We spend our last day at the coast meandering back and forth along Route 1, part of the legendary road built in the early ‘30’s linking San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Every 3 or 4 miles someone shouts “Stop! That view! We have to take a closer look”.

So we don’t get very far.

The elevation of the highway varies between just above sea level and 1000ft. But most of the vista points are high above the Pacific and the panoramic views of headlands extending for miles are simply breathtaking.

Just look at this coastline. It’s like Cornwall on steroids.

We end up staying too long and arrive at our next campsite in the dark.

We’re back inland now at Arroyo Seco. Hats off to Steve for booking this one; it’s a corker. The frogs at nearby the lake make a right old racket, the gorge at the top end of the site huge, and to complete the magic there’s a family of woodpeckers living in the tree next to the van.

Perhaps most importantly though the site has hot showers. It’s been 6 long hot days since any of us had the pleasure and things in the van were becoming a little, shall we say malodourous.

This is hiking country, so next morning its on with the boots and sunscreen and off onto the trail.

We get lost. Steve blames the map, I blame Steve. Something to do with missing a turning apparently. So our planned 6 mile loop turns into a 13 miler.

Stunning countryside though, and really not what we expect of California; lush green valleys, clear mountain streams and thousands of alpine blooms.

If you’re going to get lost this is as good a place as any to do it.
