Pt 8. Humboldt, Eureka, Redwood National Park

It’s all about the trees for the next few days. Giant Coastal Redwoods to be exact, the tallest on the planet.

95% of the world’s Redwoods grow on this relatively thin strip of coastline along the California / Oregon border. Thriving in the unique rainy climate their towering presence means we’re constantly craning our necks.

Considered to be among the oldest living things on earth some are thought to have been around for a couple of thousand years.

One 30 mile stretch of the highway is aptly named ‘the avenue of the giants’. The tallest trees here can reach an astonishing 380ft. Crazy stuff.

To give our necks a rest we drop in on Eureka. If ever a place needed an exclamation mark it’s this charming little town.

Some pretty cool street art here. Eureka!

Our campsite is in the Redwood National Park where we spend most of the next day hiking and gawping.

If you can’t gawp here you can’t gawp anywhere.

  1. Looking at some amazing 3k year old stuff here in Athens, but man made. Awe inspiring but depressing that the Brits smashed it up to steal it. Don’t know why they even want us in the EU! X
