We sign up for the free walking tour of Quito today. Well, we like walking and it’s free. So daft not to really.
Our guide is the charming Solé, who gives us an informative saunter through some of the city’s more colourful neighbourhoods. There’s a lot to take in mind you, both visually and in terms of history, as she bombards us with facts and information every step of the way. So we have to concentrate ...focus Wendy, focus!
As we approach the main plaza we notice a huge police presence. Riot shields, machine guns, armoured cars and unsmiling cops are everywhere. This gives the walk a certain edge but wasn’t quite what we expected.
Solé explains that Ecuadorians like to change Presidents as often as they change their underpants, and for a lot of disgruntled folk the incumbent Lenín Moreno, is on borrowed time.
A mass protest has been organised to ensure he’s not around for much longer and we're right in the middle of it. Which is fun.
