Look, here’s Wend dressed as a local. Does she stand out or blend in?…maybe a bit of both.
The indigenous kichwa people in this part of Ecuador have a very distinctive way of dressing. I’m no guru but have to admit the women look particularly stylish. A Fedora is the ‘must have’ item, ideally adorned with a brightly coloured feather it’s generally worn with a shawl and pleated skirt.
This morning Fernando takes us to the market in Saquisili where the womenfolk and their wonderful headwear are out in force. One of them (below) oversteps the mark by wearing 2 hats at once.

We’re a long way from the gringo trail here and clearly the only foreigners in town.
Fortunately this means we pay what the kichwa pay, and because Fernando is with us there’s no chance of piss-taking on prices.
A hand-woven alpaca blanket for $20? That’ll do nicely.
Now we just have to cart the thing on our travels for the next 4 months.
