Weekend in Mérida

Mérida is our kind of town. It has all the stuff we’ve come to expect from one of the cooler Mexican cities; the palm trees in the plaza, the fountains, the huge cathedral and the ubiquitous street entertainers (who of course aren’t cool in the slightest).

It’s just a very pleasant place to hang out, which is exactly what we do for most of the day.

Wend and pal compare their outfits for Pride.

Huge naughty chairs. Someone has been especially badly behaved.

A lovely Art Deco theatre makes a nice change from all the colonial stuff we've seen.

However, this doesn’t make the most riveting blog material, so to keep our reader interested we drive out to Mérida’s answer to Mexico City’s Anthropology Museum, the fabulously named  El Gran Museo Del Mundo Maya De Mérida.

The museum has a diverse offering with the curators opting for a scattergun ‘if it’s old, it’s in’ approach. There’s the usual evolution stuff, a wonderful section on creepy crawlies (the scientific term for Entomology) and loads of exhibits highlighting what went on in Maya culture.

The museum building is pretty special too – like a cross between the Beijing Olympics ‘birds nest’ stadium and a piece of Anthony Gormley civic art. We like it a lot.
