First impression of Costa Rica? It’s very, very, VERY green. The rainy season here runs from late May through to early December so everything has had a good watering and now that the sun is shining the flora has gone crazy.
The locals call this a Broccoli Tree (obvs).
Second impression? Paradise. I’m not usually one for exaggeration but it really is a nature lover’s dream. After three days we’ve already lost count of the amount of weird and wonderful animals we’ve seen.
Large Blue Morpho Butterfly.
...also known as the Owl Butterfly because of what the other side of his wings look like.
If Mexico was all about the cities, museums and historical sites (with some nice beaches thrown in) Costa Rica looks like being far less of a cultural gig. Everything here is geared towards making sure everyone comes into contact with as much wildlife as possible.
We’ve been staying in La Fortuna which is a mecca for extreme sports enthusiasts – zip-lining, quad biking, white water nonsense etc. We shun all of this, and in homage to our favourite deadly sin, sign up for a Sloth spotting walk. Which is brilliant.
3 toed sloth with baby. Heavy overnight rain had drenched the poor sods.
The other main attraction in town, or should I say overlooking town, is a huge volcano. Dormant now but active as recently as 2010 the Volcano Arenal manages to sneak its way into most of our pics.
There are really good hiking opportunities around here too, which is great as we've spent a lot of time sitting in the car recently. One particularly fab walk ends at a lovely waterfall where we jump in for a refreshing dip.
Mischievous Mot-Mots on the look out for trouble.
Grey Winged Sac Bats hanging in a hollowed-out tree trunk. They're tiny...
...but not as tiny as this Poisonous Tree Frog. This one appears to be wearing a pair of Levis.
Our photos aren’t great, but it’s almost impossible to take a bad picture here so for the next couple of weeks I’ll be writing less and showing more.
Thank God for that I hear you say...
